NORM & AHMED by Alex Buzo

in a double bill with the world premiere of its contemporary companion...

SHAFANA & AUNT SARRINAH by Alana Valentine

Directed by Aarne Neeme
Cast Camilla Ah Kin, Laurence Coy, Sheridan Harbridge and Craig Meneaud

In a first for Australian theatre, a classic play is reinvented by a fresh new work. Buzo’s enduring themes of cultural and generational conflict are taken up by award-winning playwright Alana Valentine (Parramatta Girls) in a thoroughly 21st century story. Classic meets contemporary as these two short plays are presented together.

Commissioned by The Alex Buzo Company, Shafana and Aunt Sarrinah tells the story of a young Afghani-Australian Muslim woman who turned to the religion of her heritage for answers after the September 11 attacks, resulting in a deep experience of faith and a controversial decision to wear the hijab.

Buzo’s Norm and Ahmed (now a NSW HSC Drama text) blazed a trail of infamy when it premiered in 1968 and was banned in three Australian states. Cops were called. Arrests were made. Charges were laid. All was not lost, though. Contemporary Australian theatre had become front page news.

Yes, we do have a dramatic tradition in Australian theatre. And the next wave is about to break...
